Target makes Thanksgiving Day closings permanent

Target will close its stores on Thanksgiving Day this year and all future Thanksgiving Days.

Target Corp. will no longer open its stores on Thanksgiving Day.

The discounter announced the news in a memo to employees by CEO Brian Cornell. The move makes permanent a shift that begin in 2020 amid the pandemic when Target, Walmart and select other retailers closed their stores on Thanksgiving Day, with the closures extending into this year as well.

"What started as a temporary measure driven by the pandemic is now our new standard - one that recognizes our ability to deliver on our guests' holiday wishes both within and well beyond store hours," Cornell wrote.

Distribution and call centers will have some staff on Thanksgiving, but stores will remain closed, the AP reported.

Target recently announced its official Black Friday deals.
